As we enter March – the warmer weather and longer days associated with spring aren’t the only thing we’re looking forward to.

Celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day in London are back in full swing as a result of the loosening of Covid-19 restrictions a green light has been given for events from March 17th – 20th.

St. Patrick’s day has a world renowned relationship with drinking – originating in the temporary removal of Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol to celebrate Saint Patrick’s passing. Fast forward to today and ‘wetting the shamrock’ with Irish whiskey and Guinness is a tradition shared across the Irish diaspora.

If you’re less pub, more club then there are a couple venues that are hosting St Patrick’s Day themed nights. 

Orange Yard, located in Soho, is hosting a party full of inflatable fun, multiple rooms with a variety of music and drink deals on the night.

Finally, if you’re after a real London Irish experience – look no further than O’neills on Wardour street who will be celebrating all week offering live sports, food and various St. Pats themed drinks and games. 

It’s the place to be especially if you’re looking for a cheeky chinese after a few rounds of guinness’s or a couple of their famous Pot of Gold Bomb cocktails as the entrance to O’neills is right next to the main strip of London’s famous Chinatown.

Day Events

While a pint of Guinness is a noble way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in London there are other ways to enjoy the festivities. 

Here are some other activities to take part in:

St. Patrick's Day Parade

This year’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade will be celebrated on the 13th of March. Therefore expect more than 50,000 people to attend the parade which will include amazing floats, marching bands, and Irish dancing schools. 

In addition to the acts above 2022’s parade will be blessed with the return of the popular Giant St Patrick and the Garda band from Dublin. 

The parade will start at Hyde Park and make its way across a 1.5 mile route. This route will pass some iconic landmarks including Piccadilly Circus, St James’s Street, and Pall Mall.

St. Patrick’s Day Festival

Following the parade the St. Patrick’s Day festivities will continue in Trafalgar Square. The festival is the crown jewel in the celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day in London which proudly honour Irish history and culture boasting a phenomenal lineup of performers. 

Anticipate family concerts, recitals of folktales, youth performances and films, and a variety of community choirs, dance groups and a singalong finale.

You thought that was it? No, no, no, that’s just the mainstage. Accompanying the mainstage will be Anna Haugh (International Chef of 2019). Anna will be demonstrating her culinary skills through food tutorials and demos.

As a result of the family friendly nature of the festival there will numerous activities for children to participate in. Traditional Irish Camogie games, medal making and face painting are just a few of the many things for children to do at the festival. 

If you get hungry you will be able to try a wide variety of Irish delicacies available at the food stalls. This will take place from 12pm – 6pm on March 13th to start your St Patrick’s week off correctly.
